solar eclipse happens due to moon coming between earth and it's shadow falls on earth. moon is much small hence it's shadow can't cover whole earth but only tiny part hence eclipse is visible only from few places of earth where shadow falls.

but earth is big enough, hence it's shadow cover whole moon. When there is lunar eclipse on earth, there is solar eclipse on moon and it becomes complete dark. When there is solar eclipse on earth, earth shines fully on moon's sky with little dark spot(shadow) on earth.

For total solar eclipse to happen it's moon should be close and big enough.
