Why do we get dreams

raghu37: Insomnia can heighten dream recall, and also lead to more stressful and disturbing dreams. (Depression and anxiety are also more likely in people with insomnia.) Obstructive sleep apnea, because of its ability to disrupt normal REM sleep, can cause disturbed dreaming with more bizarre and negative dream content.

There are several hypotheses and concepts as to why we dream. Are dreams merely part of the sleep cycle or do they serve some other purpose?

Possible explanations for why we dream include:

To represent unconscious desires and wishesTo interpret random signals from the brain and body during sleepTo consolidate and process information gathered during the dayTo work as a form of psychotherapy.
