This is because if the cocoon breaks, it causes damage to its silk threads and hence lowers the quality of silk

Because when silk moths hatch, they chew and dissolve through their cocoons, which will break the silk into several pieces and ruin its quality.
Silk is only as valuable as its quality, a chewn-thorough, partially dissolved silk can’t produce the perfect fabric, and it won’t sell well.
That’s why silk farmers boiled the cocoons in hot water, so the cocoon can unbind and turn into one single unbroken thread, the thread would later be woven into the perfect silk cloth, selling at the best prices.
