Cartilage heals slowly because cartilage is avascular, meaning it is not infused with blood vessels. Usually blood travels to the site of an injury to deliver healing components. In cartilage, blood can't bring nutrients and healing molecules directly into the tissue. These molecules must instead diffuse to the site, which takes much longer. Cells within cartilage called chondrocytes are embedded firmly into the tissue, and can't migrate to the site of injury to replace damaged cells. This means that it will take longer for the injured cartilage to repair itself since new cells must be made, and this is a very slow process. In addition, a thicker type of cartilage known as fibrocartilage scar tissue replaces injured cartilage, and this can impair movement and normal functioning of the area.
