The temperature of a substance remains constant during melting and boiling points till the completion of melting and boiling.

Heat energy given to the substance during change of state of matter is used in increasing the kinetic energy between molecules and not for increase in temperature. This heat which is required for increasing kinetic energy is called latent heat meaning hidden heat as its effect (temperature can not be seen).
