Though gold is available in free state it is costly because of its unique feature:
Gold shines and will suit many skin complexions as a jewellary.
It is also limited in earth's crust.
It will not react with surrounding air and do not form rust and shines more.
Hope this may be a valid reason.

gold is a noble metal and does not react with air, moisture or acids on it so jewelry's are made out of it.It does not corrode easily so therefore it is costly and exist in free state
