why is it easier to perform skating on the snow

It is easier to skate on snow because the upper layer of snow is covered with water. It covers with water when the snow melts. So as it is easier to slip on water it is also easier to skate on snow.

It is easier to perform skating on snow because there is less friction between both the surfaces and it is more maneuverable for the skater. The law of thermodynamics can be applied in this case which makes movement easy. Also, a film of water is apparently existing on the layer of snow that enhances faster and easier movement without slipping.
