why is NO called Nitric oxide and not Nitrogen monoxide and CaO called Calcium oxide and not calcium monoxide?

NO means one atom of oxygen. So, this means nitrogen monoxide. Thats why no need to write Nitrogen monoxide and instead we cam write nitric oxide. Similarly, CaO means One atom oxygen which means
monoxide. So, its better to call it calcium oxide
