Answer ...........

First:

What color is the sun? When does it appear red?

The sun appears reddish-orange near the horizon, and almost white when it is high in the sky.

The sun’s spectrum, or light is actually a combination of all colors combined.

It appears reddish orange near the horizon because it is shining through many layers of dust, and that dust scatters the light in a manner that makes it appear orange.

Think of looking at white light through an orange glass.

Now:

why is the moon white?

If you think about it, you may also ask: “Why are leaves green, why is a stop sign red?”

Remember, sunlight is a combination of all colors combined. So green leaves absorb all the light except green light, which they bounce back to our eyes, and appear green. Stop signs absorb all the light except the red. We call “red” the local color of the stop sign.

The local color of the moon, made of lunar dust, is a blueish grey so light as to be almost white. Therefore, the moon absorbs almost no colored light from the sun, and when overhead bounces it all back to our eyes, to appear white.

The moon will also appear reddish orange near the horizon for the same reason the sun does.

During a lunar eclipse the moon also appears a deep reddish color, simply because the sunlight has to pass through earth’s dusty atmosphere before striking the moon and bouncing back to our eyes.

Hope this helps...
