Why is the vapour pressure of a solvent lowered on the addition of a non volatile solute into it?

when a non volatile solute is added to a solvent the vapour pressure of the liquid decrease because the number of solvent molecules on the surface decrease and as a result number of solvent molecules escaping from the surface decrease
