The reservoir is created due to the presence of dam. It helps to store water at a higher potential so that maximum potential energy is converted into kinetic energy by motion of turbine which in turn helps to generate more electricity.

There are reservoirs behind every dam as it is where the water gets stored so that it could be uses for various purposes like for irrigation. And in case if the dams get damaged due to the high flow of water current then in such emergency cases a reservoir is needed.
