first, you have to know “What is Air?” Air is nothing but the molecules or particles floating in space.

If we talk about our earth, there are large numbers of molecules, atoms, particles exist to a certain level. In earth, by volume, there are approximately 78.09% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.04% carbon dioxide etc. Based on density of the molecules in different levels, there are mainly five layers-

Troposphere: 0 to 12 km (0 to 7 miles)

Stratosphere: 12 to 50 km (7 to 31 miles)

Mesosphere: 50 to 80 km (31 to 50 miles)

Thermosphere: 80 to 700 km (50 to 440 miles)

Exosphere: 700 to 10,000 km (440 to 6,200 miles)

These layers exist because, earth’s gravity attracts all the molecules towards it. The density of the molecules of the inner most layer is high because, it is the nearest layer of the earth and the effect of gravity on the molecules is very high. But as you move upward to the sky, the effect of gravity decreases with time and therefore the density of the air decreases periodically. That’s why the Exosphere layer has few numbers of air molecules compared to Troposphere layer.

Now the question is “Why is there no air in space?” Actually, from my point of view this question is not 100% correct. Because, air does exist in space. It is true that such kind of air is not suitable for any living things. It also depends on, whether you talking about empty space or another planets’ atmosphere. If we talk about another planets’ atmosphere, then we will see that every planet has their own gravity. That gravity also depends on their mass. Because, gravity is nothing but the curvature of space- time made by that planet. The greater the mass of the body curvature will be more. That means, greater the mass of the body gravity will be more. So, if the gravity of the planet is more, then the density of the air molecules will be more near the surface of the planet, and it will decrease from bottom to top of the atmosphere. However, to exist life in that planet, the composition of the air molecules should be in balance form, like earth.

But if we talk about empty space, then of course we call it vacuum, but actually it is not vacuum. Because, empty space is not nothing, it is something. There also exist some molecules like hydrogen and also some virtual particles. But the density of the molecules and particles are so negligible, because they are not strongly affected by any gravitational field of any celestial object. It is the reason that, we say there is no air in space. But actually it is not true. There exist some particles in space. Space has also some properties which we could not understand yet. Even there are some particles, about which we do not know yet. As air consists of particles, molecules etc, that’s why I think that it will be wrong if we say that there is no air in space. In stead of this, we should ask “What kind of particles do exist in space?”
