The distribution of popular generally corresponds with soil fertility. The thickly populated parts in india are the northern plains and the coastal plains.

The density of population by the large is more in well watered part of fertile northern plains of the East and the population goes to decreasing with growing airdity east to west. Therefore the west bangal is more densily populated the punjab.
