Quarternary hydrogen is not possible in alkane. Reasons:

  • The valency of the carbon is 4.
  • It means the a carbon can hold three other atoms and more than that.
  • Alkane with primary carbon: It holds one carbon atom and three primary hydrogen atoms.
  • Alkane with secondary carbon: It holds two carbon atoms and two secondary hydrogen atoms.
  • Alkane with tertiary carbon: It holds three carbon atoms and one tertiary hydrogen atoms.
  • Alkane with quarternary carbon: It holds four carbon atoms and zero quarternary hydrogen atom.
  • Since, the carbon cannot hold more than four atoms. There is no quarternary hydrogen possible in alkane.
