Biodegradable wastes pollute the environment only when they are in excess in the environment. They can affect the environment in the following ways:

1. They generate a large amount of microbial flora around the wastes. These microbes can cause many communicable diseases in humans, plants and animals.

2. These wastes generate bad odour on burning due to the release of certain gases.

3. Heaps of such wastes are the breeding grounds for carriers and vectors like mosquitoes and rats which spread so many communicable diseases.
