: Explosive numbers of Goeldichironomus insects breeding around the nearby Yamuna River are excreting on the Taj Mahal's gleaming marble, and the tomb's ivory-white exterior is becoming stainedby the green fuzz. While the green, chlorophyll-stained secretions are not harmful save for their discoloration damage to the marble, the swarms of insects are indicative of rising phosphorus and sediment levels in the Yamuna River, which is a concern: One of the largest and longest tributaries of the Ganges, the Yamuna is already one of the most polluted waterways in the country.
