A New Year's resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western Hemisphere but also found in the Eastern Hemisphere, in which a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behavior, to accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve their life.

Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts.[1]

The Romans began each year by making promises to the god Janus, for whom the month of January is named.[2]

In the Medieval era, the knights took the "peacock vow" at the end of the Christmas season each year to re-affirm their commitment to chivalry.[3]

At watchnight services, many Christiansprepare for the year ahead by praying and making these resolutions.[4]

This tradition has many other religious parallels. During Judaism's New Year, Rosh Hashanah, through the High Holidays and culminating in Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), one is to reflect upon one's wrongdoings over the year and both seek and offer forgiveness. People can act similarly during the Christian liturgical season of Lent, although the motive behind this holiday is more of sacrifice than of responsibility. In fact, the Methodist practice of New Year's resolutions came, in part, from the Lenten sacrifices.[4][verification needed] The concept, regardless of creed, is to reflect upon self-improvement annually.

an article for new year resolution

Basically a New Year resolution is made when one wants to correct the mistakes they have done the past year or do something in a more organized manner.

I have also made resolutions before, but just like anybody else, I too break it up. But this time I am going to stick to my resolutions and make sure that I change myself.

I have noted down a few resolutions that I would like to take this year and stick onto them. The most important of all is to be organized. I never have the habit of organizing my work and therefore end up in incomplete homework and projects. So this year I plan to be more systematic and organized, so that I finish my work on time and do not keep pending, the works assigned to me.

Secondly I would like to be a good reader. I have heard that reading is a good habit, but I hardly take the time to read, even if I have time. So this time I have decided that I would spent some time in a day to read some matter or a book that would improve my knowledge and interest in reading.
