In the simplest explanation:

           Trees, and all living vegetation, absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and emits oxygen — thereby sequestering the carbon in the tree. When we cut them down en-mass (a lot at a time), we tend to release that carbon back into the atmosphere because not all the tree is used.. some tree “cutting” is really clearing trees by burning them (releasing CO2) and even when they are cut parts of the tree are left to rot (tree branches to small, leaves,) which creates CO2 and methane (potent global warming gases), etc. It also affects soils which tends to sequester nitrogen, etc.
