Winnowing is a farming method developed by ancient people for separating grain from chaff. It is also used to remove weevils or other pests from stored grain. Threshing, which is the loosening of grain or seeds from the husks and straw, comes before winnowing.

Winnowing :-

Winnowing is the process in which a mixture is separated using wind or moving air.

The principle on which winnowing is based is that the different substance have different mass.

in this process , take example as you are departing grains from lighter particles (husk )

, you will have to throw it form a higher level and moving air is allowed to pass through the falling mixture (by fans or other sources) , the lighter particles (husk ) is blown away by the gas and the heavier particles ( grain) comes on the floor as it's mass is heavier and it is not blown away.
