The Indian Council Act was passed by the United Kingdom Parliament on August 1st, 1896.

  • The purpose of this legislation was to reform some aspects of the Governor General Council and to involve Indians in legislative activities.
  • Advantages of the act
  • The council was expanded to include a fifth member, and a sixth member was later added in 1874.
  • At least half of the new council members had to be non-official, i.e. British or Indian. The Viceroy had complete authority to manage the council if he so desired.
  • DISADVANTAGES OF THE ACT
  • The Indians were put forth for the council, but they were never given a formal status.
  • All ultimate power was given to the governor-general. Ordinances that were issued by the Viceroy might endure for around six months.
