a) Brass ring in electric generator: This helps to complete an electrical circuit. “In order to accomplish this, a copper or a brass commutator or slip rings is affixed to the shaft and springs press braided copper wire 'brushes' onto the rings which conduct the current.”

b) Split ring in electric motor: “The current flows through the coil in the direction TSNM. The reversal of current through the coil MNST repeats after each half rotation. As a result, the coil rotates uni-directional. The split rings help to reverse the direction of current in the circuit.  These are known as commutator."

Role of brass ring in electric generator

To conduct the current.

In certain types of electric generators the coils of the rotor have to be connected to complete an electrical circuit. In order to accomplish this 'slip rings' or a copper or brass commutator is fixed to the shaft.

Role of split ring in electric motor

To reverse the direction of current in the coil.

An electric motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. The split ring commutator is used to reverse the direction of current in the coil in an electric motor.
