Floods are mainly destructive because:

1.They cause a lot of damage to life and property. People and cattle get washed away and buildings get extensively damaged.

2.They force large scale movement of people to safer areas.

3.They cause extensive erosion along river banks and wash away huge chunks of fertile land.

4.Floods are known to trigger the outbreak of many diseases.

Floods can however be productive in the sense that:

1.They also deposit the eroded material and help form fertile areas suitable for cultivation.

2.In the presence of excess water, some of it finds its way to the water table and helps increase the level of ground water.

3.They refill lakes and ponds too.

4.Floods also increase the biodiversity in the plains. Flood waters take many species to new habitats.

Though floods are mainly destructive, there are some benefits as well.

Excess water is released by the big dams . Then the flood waters enter the lowlying villages along the river, floods are also caused by cyclones which bring heavy rains from the sea along with strong winds which uproot trees and cottages.

This can be both productive and destructive
