If a ball is dropped on the sloping roof of a house, it acquires motion and falls on the ground. That is, transformation of potential energy into kinetic energy takes place.
Potential energy is the energy of the ball’s state whereas kinetic energy is the energy that forms when the ball gets momentum while falling down the slope roof of the house.
Kinetic energy depends on the other objects of environment which made the ball to have momentum. Potential energy is the ball itself which is not determined by the environment it is in.
That’s why when the ball was at the top of the roof it also had potential energy but only when it started to come down from the roof, it started to generate kinetic energy.
