∵An element x form highest oxide of the formula XO₃.
∴ oxidation state of Oxygen will be lowest and we know , lowest oxidation number of oxygen is -2 .

∴ oxidation number of X + 3 { -2 } = 0 [ because molecule is neutral so, sum of oxidation of atoms = 0 ]
⇒ oxidation number of X = +6
e.g., highest oxidation number of X = +6
∵ group number = 10 + highest oxidation number [ this method applied when oxidation number >3 ]
∴ group number = 10 + 6 = 16

Hence, elements lies in 16th group

Hello Dear.

Here is the answer---

→→→→→→→→→

Given Chemical Formula,

                   XO₃

We know, the Lowest Oxidation number of the Oxygen is -2.

We can Observe that the Compound does not have the Positive or the negative Charge thus it is Neutral.

Hence, the Oxidation Number of the Compound Will be 0.

Thus, X + 3(-2) = 0
            X = + 6

Thus, the Highest Oxidation Number of the X is 6.

Since the Highest Oxidation Number of the Elements X is greater than 3, thus, Using the Relation,

Group Number = 10 + Highest Oxidation number of Elements given in the Compound.
                         = 10 + 6
                         = 16

Thus, it belongs to the 16 Group.

Hope it helps.

Have a Marvelous Day.
