no. of students = x-8

each one's share =Rs480\x-8

480x - 480x + 3840 = 10x² - 80x
10x² - 80x - 3840 = 0
x² - 8x - 384 = 0
x² - 24x +16x - 384 = 0
x(x - 24) + 16( x - 24) = 0
(x-24) (x+ 16) = 0

either, x = 24 or x = -16 ( N.A)

original no. of students = 24
no. of students attended the picnic = 24-8
= 16
