area of shaded region =area of PQRS -area of triangle(PBA+BQC+COR+ASR)
area = (20 \times 24)  + (1 \div 2)(  - (10 \times 12) - (10 \times 12) - (20 \times 12) - (12 \times 8) )\\  = 480  + (1 \div 2)(  - 240 - 240 - 96) \\  = 480  + (1 \div 2)( - 480 - 96) \\  = 192 \: cm {}^{2}

first take out the area of the outer rectangle then find the area of the four triangles by the formula 0.5xhightxbase. then subtract the area of the triangles from the area of the rectangle
