The ancient mariner commited a grave crime by killing the harmless innocent albatross with his crossbow.
The other mariners first thought that this will bring misfortune to them as he had killed the albatross without any reasons but later when they noticed that nothing wrong was happening to them they criticized the albatross calling him a bad omen. Thus they became partners of crime with the ancient mariner.(The other mariners judged beings acc. to the outcomes that they suffered).
Soon, the winds stopped blowing and the ship came to a halt for several days making the mariners hungry and thirsty. They could not even speak as their throats were dry and parched and tongues dry and twisted. They hallucinated strange frightening beings dancing around the ship, the sea seemed to rot and burn with green, blue, white flames making it look like a witch's oil.
The other mariners held the ancient mariner responsible for their conditions and hanged the dead albatross around his neck taking out the cross(their sacred charm) from his neck.
Hope it helps.Thnx for asking ☺
