because he knew that the convict is a good man.when the police arrested convict on the account of his stealing candlesticks the bishop told to the police that he is his friend and not a thief and the candlesticks are gift that are given to convict by bishop. bishop want to convert the convict into a good man once again and he rekindled a new hope in convict by helping him.
