What is horsepower?
It is nothing but a unit of power.
In the International System of Units (SI) ,The electrical equivalent of one horsepower is 746 watts.

Why is horsepower called so?
When the steam engine began to do the work of horses in the mines during the early 1800s, the mine owners began to ask how many horses an engine would replace. James Watt, who invented steam engines, figured out a mathematical way to equate horses to engine power. Thus the term horsepower was invented.

He determined that a horse could do 33,000 foot-pounds of work in a minute and dubbed that “one horsepower.”

Why we still use this term?
It is not like that the term is widely used nowadays. It uses is reducing year by year. Now it is only used to define the power of automobiles. So, there are only historical reasons due to which we are stiil using this term.
