Butane has a straight chain structure whereas isobutane has a branched chain structure. A branched chain exhibits weaker Van Der Waals forces as compared to straight chains. Strong intermolecular forces in butane results in a higher boiling point as larger energy is required to separate them.

with the branching of the chain the carbon atoms tend to come closer. this will decrease the molecular size as well as the surface area. The Vander waals forces of attraction which depend upon the surface area will also decrease and this will lead to decrease in the magnitude of attractive forces or boiling point. thus more branching of carbon atom chain, lesser will be the boiling point
