The northern plains of India have been populated for thousands of years. There are many factors that contribute towards selecting an ideal area for settlement.

Water Availability : The northern pains have a large number of rivers and streams. The water is extremely essential for livelihood. Rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Indus, Kosi, Chambal, Sutlej etc. are perennial i.e.  they have water throughout the year and are constant sources of freshwater. Water resource play a vital role in a developing civilization. If you see all great civilizations were born on the banks of some of the great rivers e.g. egyptian civilization along nile, Indus Valley along Indus, ancient china along yellow river and so on.

Food Supply : Early humans were hunters and therefore had to keep travelling to eat but when they learnt how to cultivate food they started to settle down. To grow food you need fertile soil. The plains of North India are essentially made of alluvium, the fertile soil brought down by the river. These areas had high productivity and could support large populations with it's agricultural produce.Economical Benefits : As food supply picked up so did prosperity. everyone wants to be rich. So people colonized only those areas where they could earn a livelihood because no one would make a home in a desert and no one wants to be poor.A large flat land : As the name says, "plains", these areas have large expanse of flat land. It was easier building cities on flat lands when compared to hills or valleys. So people obviously preferred plains over difficult terrain.

So these populations were settled by small communities and as we all know that population grows exponentially. So the small communities are now huge populations and that is how the plains are densely populated
